1. Stop re-reading notes. Start solving questions.

This is the single biggest shift I make with every student I tutor. Re-reading a revision guide feels productive, but it creates recognition without recall. You feel like you understand a method right up until you're faced with a blank exam paper and no worked example to follow. Maths is a doing subject, not a reading subject. If you take one thing from this guide, take this: spend at least 80% of your revision time answering questions, not reading about how to answer them.


2. Use topic-by-topic practice before full papers

Full past papers are essential later on, but early in your GCSE Maths revision timetable, work topic-by-topic. If trigonometry is weak, do twenty trigonometry questions in a row until the method is automatic, rather than one trigonometry question buried inside a mixed paper where you can't isolate what went wrong.


3. Mark your own work properly

Don't just check whether your final answer matches the mark scheme. Look at how many marks you'd have picked up for method even with a wrong final answer, and identify exactly which line of working went wrong. This single habit tells you more about your actual exam readiness than any amount of passive revision.


4. Build a "mistakes log"

Keep a running list of every question you get wrong, written in your own words: what the question was really asking, what you did instead, and what you should do next time. Review this log weeks before your exam. 5. Interleave your topics

Don't revise algebra for two weeks straight and then move on. Mix topics within each session (a bit of ratio, a bit of geometry, a bit of algebra). Here's a structure I use with students in the 8–10 weeks before their exams. Adjust the exact hours to your own schedule, but keep the shape:


Weeks 1–3 (Topic audit and foundation building): Go through the topics list above and rate yourself 1–5 on each. Spend these three weeks almost entirely on your 1s and 2s, using topic-specific practice questions, not full papers.


Weeks 4–6 (Mixed practice and past papers): Start doing full past papers under timed conditions, one every few days, alternating calculator and non-calculator. Mark thoroughly and update your mistakes log after every single paper.


Weeks 7–8 (Targeted repair): Revisit your mistakes log. You'll likely notice patterns — maybe every paper you're losing marks on the same 2–3 topic areas. Spend this final stretch closing those specific gaps rather than doing more generic revision.


Final week (Light, low-stress consolidation): Skim your mistakes log, do one final timed paper, and rest. Cramming new content in the final 48 hours rarely helps and often increases anxiety without improving performance.

Understanding GCSE Maths Grade Boundaries


GCSE Maths grade boundaries shift slightly every year, because exam boards adjust them to keep results consistent across different exam difficulties (a process called comparable outcomes). This means the same raw mark might correspond to a grade 6 one year and a grade 7 the next, depending on how the whole national cohort performed.


The practical takeaway: don't fixate on last year's exact grade boundary as a target. Instead, aim to comfortably exceed the boundary range from the past 3–4 years for your target grade, giving yourself a buffer against exam-to-exam variation. A student aiming for a grade 7, for instance, is generally safer targeting 75%+ raw marks rather than the bare minimum boundary from any single year.




Common GCSE Maths Revision Mistakes to Avoid


I. Revising only the topics you enjoy: Time pressure means your weakest topics deserve the most time, not the least.


II. Never revising under timed conditions. Untimed practice doesn't prepare you for the exam-day pressure of pacing yourself across 80+ marks in 90 minutes.


III. Ignoring calculator technique. Losing marks to calculator errors on Paper 2 or 3 is entirely avoidable with a few focused practice sessions.


IV. Skipping "show your working." Even Foundation tier papers award method marks — a wrong final answer with correct working can still pick up most of the marks for that question.
