Physical and Chemical Changes

Every day, matter around you is changing — ice melts, paper tears, bread toasts, iron rusts. But not all changes are the same. Some changes are physical, and some are chemical — and knowing which is which is one of the most important foundations in KS3 and GCSE Science. physical change alters the appearance, shape, or state of a substance without changing what it actually is. The substance's chemical make-up (its molecules) stays exactly the same — only its physical form changes.

Examples of physical changes:

  • Ice melting into water (and water freezing back into ice)
  • Tearing a piece of paper

What Is a Chemical Change?

Signs That a Chemical Change Has Happened


Scientists look for these clues to spot a chemical reaction:

  • Colour change — a new, unexpected colour appears
  • Gas produced — bubbles or fizzing that weren't there before
  • Temperature change — the mixture gets hotter or colder on its own
  • Smell — a new odour is produced
  • Precipitate forms — a solid appears in what was a liquid mixture
  • Light given off — such as a flame or spark
