Combustion Reactions Explained

Combustion is burning — when a fuel reacts with oxygen and releases heat. The fire triangle shows that fuel, heat, and oxygen are all needed for burning to happen, and removing any one stops the fire. Combustion is a type of oxidation reaction, since it involves a substance combining with oxygen to form oxides. When hydrocarbon fuels (containing carbon and hydrogen) burn with plenty of oxygen, complete combustion occurs, producing carbon dioxide and water. If oxygen is limited, incomplete combustion happens instead, producing toxic carbon monoxide and/or soot alongside water. This is why good ventilation matters when using gas appliances. Combustion reactions can be written as word equations (fuel + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water) or balanced symbol equations, such as butane's: 2C₄H₁₀ + 13O₂ → 8CO₂ + 10H₂O.
